GREAT BENIN ORIGINS CONVENTION PAPER PRESENTATION ON THE PREVENTION OF OPIOID ADDICTION AMONG IGODOMIGODO/IDU DESCENDANTS
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), “opioids are psychoactive substances derived from the opium poppy, or their synthetic analogues”
Examples of these synthetic analogues are tramadol, morphine, oxycodone, heroin and methadone. Opioids are described as psychoactive, which means they affect the mind.
An estimated 69,000 people die from opioids overdose yearly while an estimated 15 million people suffer from opioid dependence/addiction
Opioids in high doses can cause respiratory depression and death because of their effect on the part of the brain which regulates breathing .
WHY MUST GBO ACT TO PREVENT AN OPIOID EPIDEMIC AMONG IGODOMIGODO/IDU DESCENDANTS?
GBO is a socio-cultural organization committed to the development, unity and wellbeing of Igodomigodo/Idu descendants. It is an organization set-up to promote unity and economic development of Idu descendants and their relatives. Thus it is expedient that GBO champions the prevention of opioid addiction among our youths. The youths are the back-bone of every society and they must be protected from vices that will destroy their future. Students of history are familiar with the damage caused by opioids (heroin) addiction to the African American community in the 70s and 80s. The effects of heroin addiction are still visible in those communities even today. Heroin coupled with other factors destroyed the family unit in African American communities and we cannot allow that happen in our beautiful Igodomigodo.
The family unit is the building block of every African society; GBO must not allow it to be destroyed. We are already witnesses to the damage cultism, human trafficking, 419, examination malpractices and short-cuts /quick fixes have caused among our youths, we must not allow drug abuse/addiction to be added to the list. Thus this paper is a clarion call to GBO and its members to ensure that drug abuse/addiction is eradicated from amongst Igodomigodo/Idu descendants. Imagine an Igodomigodo society with a dangerous mix of drug abuse and cultism/armed robbery? Who in their sane mind will want to invest in such a society? How can such a society produce useful youths? We must act now so that posterity will be favourable to us. We cannot wait for the palace to do everything.
RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHAT GBO SHOULD DO
As a first step towards actualizing this goal, I suggest that GBO creates and pays for adverts on major Television and Radio stations in Edo, Delta and Rivers state which would use the most ‘persuasive’ videos and pictures to encourage our youths to stay clear of hard drugs especially opioids. If the cost for a TV advert is too much, then well thought out radio adverts which uses the most persuasive music and words should be used. We must develop an advert that will become a household name in these states and will be easily understood by the people of the states. I believe that this and other methods should be deployed to address this impending disaster of drug addiction. Our people say “the stone you see coming cannot blind you”, we must not allow this stone to blind us.
Long Live GBO, Long Live Igodomigodo/Idu descendants.
